Florida Keys Backcountry "There is something for everyone" in the Florida Keys. Backcountry fishing is an expedition north from the Keys into a watery wilderness of uninhabited, mangrove-lined keys and broad expanses of shallow water areas called flats. Quite often guides will take their anglers into a nearby national parks or refuge area such as Biscayne National Park, Everglades National Park, Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, National Key Deer Refuge, or Key West National Wildlife Refuge. These trips are highlighted by beautiful scenery, plentiful bird life, and for the most part, superb fishing. It is a true “get away from it all” adventure.
Fishing Guides may choose to casting shrimp-tipped bait into backcountry channels, creeks, or along deeper backcountry shorelines for a wide variety of fish that includes trout, snapper, redfish, snook, pompano, black drum, ladyfish, sheepshead, and jack. This is often called “potluck fishing” because one never knows what’s going to bite next. Backcountry guides must know which hour in the tide to fish, as well as the effects of water temperature, wind speed and direction, cloud cover, moon phase, barometric changes, and a host of other variables for great fishing!

It is an underwater sea-mount, comes up to, within 480 feet from the surface and is located in waters that are at least twice that deep. The constant easterly flow of the Gulfstream against this "hump" creates a noticeable upwelling that draws baitfish...which draws larger fish...which draws huge fish and so on. The feeding activity in turn attracts large numbers of sea birds and is a sure fire way to find the hungry fish once you arrive. Everything from Mako sharks to Blackfin Tuna to Amberjacks can be caught on the Hump and it is not too difficult to spend an entire day in that relatively small but productive area. Most fishermen fishing the Hump are trolling small feathers or ballyhoo (fished at least 50 yards behind the boat if not much more) for Blackfin Tuna.
You've probably already used Google and asked for Florida Keys fishing guides and the location (Marathon FL). Over the phone develop a rappore and ask your guide about their experience with your level of fishing. Make sure they have the patience to work with you if your inexperienced or with kids. If you don't feel comfortable talking with them on the phone it's not going to get any better on the water. It's also important to ask (once you get there) to see their Coast Guard issued captains license and proof of insurance!
